The Stones Cry Out by Molyda Szymusiak
Molyda Szymusiak (Buth Keo) was born in Phnom Penh on October 19, 1962. After the 1975 Khmer Rouge takeover, she and her family were driven from the capital into the Cambodian countryside. Molyda and the three surviving members of her family reached the Kao I Dang refugee camp on the Thai border in 1980. In 1981 they went to Paris, where Molyda and two of her cousins were adopted by Polish exiles Jan Szymusiak, an academic historian, and his wife, Carmen, a psychiatrist.
Why?
I chose this book, The Stones Cry Out, because I wanted to view the horrors of genocide from a person as similar to me so that it would be easier to understand the persons' actions, decisions and feeling. Molyda was about 14 years old, a girl, with younger siblings. I am also a girl, 14 years old who has a younger brother.
I also chose The Stones Cry Out because I have always had an interest in Cambodia but I have, truthfully, never heard of a genocide happening there. The only genocide I had ever known of involved the Nazis. Therefore, I decided to go with The Stones Cry Out to develop a better understanding of how their history impacted how they are now.
